The FIFA World Cup kicks off on 11 June in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Here is everything a South African punter needs — African team previews, value bets, accumulator tips, and which bookmaker is offering the best WC markets right now.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup — the first 48-team edition, spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico — kicks off on 11 June. For South African punters, it is the biggest betting event in four years. The markets are deeper, the odds are more competitive, and the tournament has more African representation than ever before. With nine CAF nations in the draw, there is genuine reason to back an African team to go deep. Here is everything you need.

The African Teams and Their Real Chances

Morocco (Group H): The 2022 semi-finalists are the standout African bet this tournament. Walid Regragui has built a tactically evolved side that has beaten the world's best — including France and Portugal. Their 2022 run was not a fluke; it was a system. At around 22/1 to win the tournament and 5/2 to reach the quarter-finals or better, Morocco represent genuine each-way value. Back them to reach the last eight at minimum.

Senegal (Group D): Aliou Cissé's side are the current AFCON holders and perhaps the most complete squad in Africa. Sadio Mané, now 34, is slower but still devastating in tight spaces. The real danger man is Ismaïla Sarr — quick, direct, and capable of single-handedly changing a knockout tie. At 33/1 outright, Senegal are worth a small stake. Quarter-final at 7/4 is the better value play.

Nigeria (Group F): The Super Eagles have been volatile in qualifying but arrive at the tournament with genuine attacking talent. Victor Osimhen, fit and sharp after a strong club season, is one of the most dangerous strikers in the competition outright. Nigeria to reach the knockouts is a near-certainty in a manageable group. They are the most betable African side on a match-by-match basis.

Egypt (Group B): Built entirely around Salah, who turns 34 in tournament week. The Pharaohs are dangerous in tight moments but lack the depth of Morocco or Senegal. Back them to navigate the group stage and bet against them facing elite sides in the knockouts.

Côte d'Ivoire (Group A): The reigning AFCON champions landed in one of the harder groups. They have match-winners — Sébastien Haller (fit again), Frank Kessié — but the defensive structure has been vulnerable in big moments. Best left alone for outright markets; live betting during their matches could be rewarding.

The Five Best Value Bets for SA Punters

  1. Morocco to reach the semi-finals — 8/1 (Betway). In a 48-team field with expanded knockouts, Morocco's path to the last four is realistic. This is the bet of the tournament.
  2. Nigeria's Victor Osimhen top African scorer — 5/2. In form, hungry, and playing in a side that creates for him. Take it before the odds shorten at kick-off.
  3. Senegal to win Group D — 11/10 (Hollywoodbets). Their group is manageable. This is as close to a banker as the opening round offers for an African side.
  4. Argentina vs France in the final — 14/1 (Sportingbet). The two best squads in the world, both have drawn favourable sides of the bracket. A rematch of 2022 is not a stretch.
  5. Tournament's highest-scoring group to include an African nation — 13/8. The expanded format means groups are smaller and goals per game tend to run high in later group stages. This is speculative but decent value at the price.

Accumulator Tips for Opening Week

The opening weekend (11–15 June) offers the richest acca opportunities before the market gets fully priced in. Our suggested opening-round accumulator:

  • Morocco to win Group H — 4/5
  • Senegal to win Group D — 11/10
  • Nigeria to qualify from groups — 4/7
  • Brazil to win their group — 8/11

Combined at Betway: roughly 9/1 on a four-fold. Place a R100 stake and you are looking at a R1,000 return if all four come in. Use our World Cup Acca Builder to construct and compare your own slip across bookmakers.

Which SA Bookmaker Has the Best World Cup Markets?

Betway is currently leading on outright markets — their ante-post prices on African teams are consistently 10–15% better than rivals. Hollywoodbets wins on live in-play pricing during match broadcasts. Sportingbet offers the best acca insurance promotions — a free bet back if one leg loses on a 5-fold or more. Use all three, compare before every bet, and never settle for the first odds you see. Our Live Odds Comparison page pulls live prices from all three simultaneously.
