The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the biggest football tournament ever staged. For the first time in history, 48 nations will compete — up from 32 — across three host countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With 104 matches scheduled from June 11 to July 19, there is more football than ever to get your teeth into.
The African Teams to Watch
Africa gets 9 spots at this World Cup, up from 5. The confirmed African qualifiers include Morocco, who are dark horses after their historic 2022 semi-final run, Nigeria, Senegal led by Sadio Mané, Egypt, and Cameroon. These are the teams most South Africans will be getting behind when Bafana Bafana isn't involved.
Morocco deserve special attention. Their squad is deep, their coach Walid Regragui has built a genuine winning culture, and they have real quality in midfield with Azzedine Ounahi and Sofyan Amrabat. If any African team can reach the final, it is Morocco.
Time Zones for SA Fans
South Africa is UTC+2. Most group stage games kick off at these SAST times:
- 19:00 SAST — afternoon kick-offs in USA
- 22:00 SAST — evening kick-offs in USA
- 01:00 SAST — late USA West Coast games
The group stages run from June 11 to June 27. Plan your viewing — and your slips — around the 19:00 and 22:00 windows.
