Why Coaches in the PSL Rarely Last Long

The average PSL coaching tenure is 14 months. We examine the pressure culture, boardroom impatience, fan expectations, and short-term thinking that make stability impossible โ and why it is costing the league.
Josรฉ Riveiro has been at Orlando Pirates for three years. Rulani Mokwena has been at Sundowns for three. These two, remarkably, represent the longest-tenured coaches at their respective clubs in over a decade. Everywhere else in the PSL, the revolving door spins with disorienting speed. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, 11 of the league's 16 clubs have changed their head coach at least once. Three clubs have changed theirs three times. The average tenure of a PSL coach who was sacked โ rather than completing their contract โ is eight months. The pattern is not just inefficient. It is destroying the possibility of meaningful footballing development.
The Pressure Culture
PSL football exists in a pressure ecosystem that makes patience structurally difficult. Supporters with social media access and fierce tribalism can generate a significant online noise campaign within days of a poor result. Boards, sensitive to supporter sentiment and sponsor relations, tend to interpret this noise as a mandate for change. The problem is that most footballing development โ building a playing style, bedding in tactical patterns, developing young players โ requires a minimum of 18 months to show results. Eight months buys you an early indication. It does not buy you a conclusion.
The Board Impatience Factor
Not all coaching dismissals are fan-driven. Many are boardroom decisions made by executives who treat a football club like a corporate division โ where quarterly results determine performance reviews. This misapplication of business thinking to sporting development is particularly destructive because football results are not linear. A club building something worthwhile will often have a difficult period โ young players making mistakes, a new system not yet automatic โ before the results arrive. Boards that dismiss coaches in this phase are typically dismissing them at the exact moment the project was about to bear fruit.
The Kaizer Chiefs Exception (Almost)
Chiefs have given their current technical leadership more runway than they have in years. The decision to resist the temptation to dismiss the technical team after a difficult first half of the current season โ opting instead to back the rebuild philosophy โ is producing visible returns. This month's 3-0 win over Richards Bay, the emergence of young players, the consistency of performance: these are products of a building process that required patience. The lesson is there for every other PSL board.
What Stability Produces
Riveiro at Pirates. Mokwena at Sundowns. The connection between coaching tenure and title-challenging performance is not coincidental. When a coach knows he will still be in his job in May, he makes decisions in August that are built for May. Short-term thinking produces short-term football. The PSL wants to be a competitive, respected league. Producing that requires the courage to back coaches through the difficult middle period where development happens and results are not yet guaranteed.
