On a day that South African football will never forget, Orlando Pirates beat Cape Town City 2-1 as Sundowns drew with Chippa. After 11 years, the Buccaneers are champions. Soweto erupts.
It is over. Eleven years of waiting, of near-misses, of watching Mamelodi Sundowns parade trophies while the Buccaneers stood in the wings. On Saturday afternoon, across 90 minutes at DHL Newlands Stadium in Cape Town, Orlando Pirates Football Club reclaimed the Betway Premiership title โ and South African football changed. Not because a new team won a trophy, but because the team that won it did so with a season of such conviction, such fight, and such dramatic final-day brilliance that the title could not have felt more earned if they had scripted it.
The final scoreline was 2-1 to Pirates in Cape Town. Simultaneously at Loftus Versfeld, Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United โ a result that, in combination with the Pirates win, gave the Buccaneers the title by a single goal on goal difference. The mathematics were almost too tight to bear. When the final whistle sounded in both stadiums simultaneously, Soweto erupted in a way that the city has not erupted for football in more than a decade.
The Match That Won the League
Cape Town City played exactly as Pirates' most anxious supporters had feared โ pressing early, physical in the challenge, and completely uninterested in making things comfortable for the side that needed three points. City took the lead on 23 minutes through a close-range finish that silenced the travelling Pirates contingent in the Newlands corner. For ten minutes, the title seemed to be tilting back toward Tshwane. Then Tshegofatso Mabasa โ the man who has defined Pirates' season โ rose at the back post to head home an Evidence Makgopa cross, and equilibrium was restored.
The winner came from the last person Cape Town City would have wanted to provide it. Relebohile Mofokeng, 19 years old, received the ball 25 metres from goal in the 71st minute, drifted inside his marker with three touches of acceleration that no defender can match, and curled the ball into the far corner with the outside of his right foot. The technique was extraordinary. The composure, from a teenager in a match that could define his club's season, was beyond extraordinary. It was the kind of moment that confirms a player's greatness not just for this season but for the decade ahead.
The Sundowns Draw That Made It Possible
Orlando Pirates' title was not won by Pirates alone. Chippa United โ fighting for their own survival at the bottom of the table โ delivered one of the most impactful results of the entire PSL season, holding Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Versfeld in a performance of organised, desperate, superbly motivated football. Chippa's equaliser on 78 minutes came from a set piece โ a goal so consequential that the Chippa players celebrated with the intensity of men who understood exactly what it meant for someone else. They did not save themselves. But they changed South African football's story in the process.
What This Means for Josรฉ Riveiro
In December 2022, a Spanish coach who had never managed a team in Africa arrived in Soweto and told the Buccaneers faithful he was going to win them a league title. The reaction was polite scepticism. Nobody in South African football had quite seen a foreign coach arrive with that kind of quiet confidence and actually deliver. Riveiro has now delivered. His tactical evolution of this Pirates squad โ from a solid but inconsistent unit into a coherent, belief-driven, title-winning machine โ is the greatest individual coaching achievement in South African club football since Pitso Mosimane built the Sundowns dynasty. He is, without question, the PSL's coach of the season. He may be one of the finest coaches ever to work in this country.
Mofokeng, Mabasa, and a Squad for the Ages
Individual honours are secondary to the collective, but they deserve naming. Tshegofatso Mabasa finished with 17 PSL goals โ joint-highest in the league. Relebohile Mofokeng provided 16 direct goal contributions from the wing at 19 years old while being tracked by European scouts at every game. Evidence Makgopa and Olisa Ndah were the best striker-and-centre-back pairing in the country. Sipho Chaine kept 11 clean sheets. This was a squad performance in the truest sense โ the burden was shared, the belief was shared, and now the trophy is shared.
What Comes Next
Pirates are PSL champions. The celebration will last weeks and is fully deserved. But even in this moment, the challenge ahead is visible. Riveiro has earned significant attention from clubs in Spain and Portugal. Mofokeng will almost certainly move to Europe this summer. Makgopa has been linked with a move. Retaining the core of a title-winning squad is the hardest task in South African football โ Sundowns discovered this every season, and their model of replacing talent through sharp scouting is the template Pirates must now build. The dynasty is not yet written. But its first chapter has been completed. And what a chapter it is.
Orlando Pirates. PSL Champions 2025/26. Eleven years. The drought is over. Soweto is dancing.
