The PSL season has ended and South Africa's pre-season cup is next on the calendar. Here is a complete MTN8 2026 preview โ who qualifies, who the bookmakers fancy, and which dark horse could shock everyone in August.
The final PSL whistle of the 2025/26 season has blown and within days the conversation turns to what comes next. For the eight highest-placed clubs from this season, the MTN8 awaits in August โ South Africa's pre-season cup that has, over the past four years, become one of the most competitive knockout competitions on the continent. Here is everything you need to know about the 2026 edition before the draw is made.
Who Qualifies for the MTN8 2026?
The MTN8 is exclusive โ only the top 8 finishers from the previous PSL season earn entry. Based on the final 2025/26 standings, the eight clubs are:
- Orlando Pirates โ PSL Champions 2025/26
- Mamelodi Sundowns โ Runners-up, heaviest favourites regardless of final position
- Cape Town City โ Consistent top-four finishers under Eric Tinkler
- SuperSport United โ Perennial MTN8 participants, two-time winners
- Stellenbosch FC โ Back-to-back Carling Knockout winners, growing fast
- AmaZulu FC โ Finished strongly in the second half of the season
- Golden Arrows โ The most consistent overachievers in the PSL
- Sekhukhune United โ Impressive second season after promotion, earned their place
The Favourites
Mamelodi Sundowns (7/4 with Betway) are the dominant force regardless of where they finished in the league. Rulani Mokwena's squad is the deepest in SA football โ even in what was a below-par PSL campaign by their own standards, they possess more quality from one to eleven than any other club. In a knockout format over two legs, depth is the decisive variable, and nobody has more of it. They have won the MTN8 four times in the past six seasons. Book them as favourites and do not be surprised.
Orlando Pirates (5/2) arrive as PSL champions and carrying enormous momentum. A trophy-winning squad performs differently in pre-season cup football โ the self-belief compounds. Riveiro will rotate heavily, but the squad has the quality to absorb rotation. Do not back against champions in August. The threat is very real.
Cape Town City (9/2) are the value selection. Tinkler has turned City into one of the most tactically intelligent teams in the country. Their away-leg performances have been outstanding all season, and in a competition that rewards defensive organisation and clinical execution on the counter, they are precisely the kind of side that beats the bigger clubs on aggregate. They reached the 2022 final and could do so again.
The Dark Horse: Stellenbosch FC
Stellenbosch's back-to-back Carling Knockout wins proved something fundamental: this is a club that knows how to win in knockout football. Their players are conditioned for it psychologically in a way that most SA clubs are not. In August, when Sundowns' squad is half at the World Cup and half on pre-season holiday, Stellenbosch will be sharp, organised, and dangerous. At 14/1 to win the competition, they are the best each-way bet in the MTN8 market.
Format Reminder
Quarter-finals are played home-and-away (August), semi-finals the same (September), and the final is a one-off fixture at a neutral venue in October. Away goals count in the event of a draw on aggregate. The winner earns a CAF Confederation Cup group stage spot โ which, for a club like Cape Town City or Stellenbosch, represents the greatest continental opportunity in their histories.
